Egan Bernal’s fractures ‘cured’, could feasibly race within a month, says doctor

Egan Bernal's fractures 'cured', could feasibly race within a month, says doctor

In a surprising turn of events, a doctor at the hospital where Egan Bernal was treated following his multiple-fracture training crash announced on Thursday that the Colombian’s condition is good enough that he could feasibly be back racing within a month.

Bernal’s fractures have been “cured”, according to surgeon Gustavo Uriza, and after four months out the 25-year-old should now be able to return to his top form.

“From the 120th day after the accident, I think Egan can return to his maximum power, get on the pedals and resume competition, in shape,” Uriza said, speaking at an online press conference and reported by the aptly-named Colombian news outlet Sports.

Seeing as it’s 95 days since Bernal’s crash on home roads, that means Bernal could, in theory, be in a bike race within a month according to Uriza’s calculations. Of course, the two-time Grand Tour winner’s return is unlikely to be rushed and it will be up to his Ineos Grenadiers coaches to decide how and when he returns to the peloton.

“His coaches in Europe are the ones who have to give the green light. But as far as I’m concerned, he’s ready at that point,” Uriza concluded.

After remaining in Colombia during his recovery, Bernal was reportedly set to return to Europe this week to continue his rehabilitation and training program closer to his trade team.

“Egan is going to be around for a while,” Bernal said, positive about his comeback in a recent video documenting his recovery. “I’m hoping to get back to racing, they should be expecting me because I will be back.”
