Milan Vader is awake two weeks after heavy crash at Itzulia Basque Country

Jumbo-Visma’s Milan Vader is awake and due to head back to the Netherlands two weeks after his heavy crash in the penultimate stage of the Itzulia Basque Country.

“Milan’s recovery is progressing steadily, thanks to the good care of the medical staff,” Jumbo-Visma said. “Next week, Milan will normally come to the Netherlands for the next step in his recovery process.”

The 26-year-old went over the guardrail on a descent 100 km from the finish of stage 5. He reportedly suffered multiple fractures to his vertebrae, collarbone and shoulder blade, he required the insertion of stents in his carotid arteries and was placed into an artificial coma.

The Zeeland native has remained in the Bilbao hospital since his crash, joined within hours by his parents. Vader was brought out of his artificial coma on Tuesday (April 19) and he is said to have asked after his teammates immediately after he woke up.
