Cycling silly season: Van Aert and Vos take on Van der Poel and Van Vleuten
After the spectacles that were this July’s Tours de France, what else could the cycling world possibly conjure up to top either race?
Well, what about a pairs time trial between some of the best male and female riders on the planet.
Taking place at a post-Tour criterium in Roosendaal in the Netherlands, a lucrative day out for the riders after their recent racing efforts, Annemiek van Vleuten won the women’s race ahead of Marianne Vos and Shirin van Anrooij while Van Aert beat both Fabio Jakobsen and Mathieu van der Poel in the men’s race.
Then came the pairs time trial, with Van Aert and Vos taking on the other duos of Van der Poel and Van Vleuten, as well as Bauke Mollema and Ellen van Dijk. Coming just a day after confirming her Tour de France victory, Van Vleuten only learned about her participation in the Roosendaal criterium 48 hours before it happened.
Van Aert and Vos, both Jumbo-Visma riders and winners of the Tour points classification this year, defeated the two Dutch pairings with Mollema and Van Dijk second ahead of Van der Poel and Van Vleuten.
Even though it’s only a criterium, more of this please. What about we next have Vos and Van Aert racing Van Vleuten and Van der Poel up Alpe d’Huez, relaying a hairpin at a time?
