The Canadian’s teammate, the sprinter Itamar Einhorn, was also caught in the same crash but was able to race on. The Israeli national champion came off much better than his GC leader who seemed to be nursing a forehead injury, leading to concerns that Woods might have suffered a concussion or an eye injury, either of which would seriously impair his ability to continue safely.
Woods is the second rider to abandon the Vuelta, following Steff Cras who suffered fractures to his elbow, scaphoid and finger in a high-speed crash on stage 2. The 26-year-old Belgian was Lotto Soudal’s best hope for a top-10 finish at the last Grand Tour of the season.
