Tiesj Benoot crashes while training in Italy, suffers fractures
Jumbo-Visma’s Tiesj Benoot crashed while training in Italy on Monday, suffering multiple fractures and other injuries. None are believed to be life threatening.
The Belgian was flown home on Monday and his team has not yet made an official statement regarding the extent of his injuries or the precise nature of the crash, other than the fact that it happened on a descent. It is unclear, according to a report in Het Laatste Nieuws, whether a vehicle was involved. According to the HLN report, the injuries are significant enough that he will not race again this season.
Following a break after Jumbo’s incredibly successful Tour de France, Benoot was in northern Italy for an altitude training camp ahead of the last part of his season. He was scheduled to take on the Deutschland Tour following by the two Canadian one-days, the GP Québec and GP Montréal.
