Tour of Britain stage 6 cancelled following death of Queen Elizabeth II

Stage 6 of the Tour of Britain has been cancelled in light of the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

The United Kingdom will enter a 10-day period of national mourning following the death of the country’s longest reigning monarch.

During this time, the London Stock Exchange will close for at least one day, comedy programming on the BBC national broadcaster will be removed and major sporting events like the football Premier League are likely to be suspended, as well as the ongoing Tour of Britain.

Race organisers have announced that Friday’s stage 6 in Gloucestershire, in the west of the country, has been cancelled. A decision on the final stages 7 and 8 is expected on Friday morning.

Following a statement from Buckingham Palace on Thursday afternoon that there was concern over the health of Queen Elizabeth II, it is understood the Tour of Britain organisers began exploring options of what to do should she pass away, following the expected plans of other major sporting events. Queen Elizabeth passed away in Balmoral, Scotland, on Thursday afternoon.

CyclingTips has reached out to the organisers of the GPs de Montreal and Quebec, the Canadian WorldTour one-day races. Queen Elizabeth II was Canada’s Head of State and the country will also be partaking in displays of national mourning. It is not currently known whether either race will be disrupted.

“The Tour of Britain organisation, alongside the teams, riders and officials involved in the event, are deeply saddened by the passing of Queen Elizabeth II,” the Tour of Britain said in a statement.

“We would like to send their deepest condolences to the whole of the Royal Family.

“As a result, stage six in Gloucestershire on Friday 9 September, scheduled to take place between Tewkesbury and Gloucester, will not take place.

“Further updates in regards to the status of stages seven and eight will be provided in due course.”
