CyclingTips feature named on prestigious Pocket 'Best of 2022' list

The major CyclingTips feature Exposed by a Strava KOM: The Many Lives of a Fake Pro Cyclist has been named on the Pocket Best of 2022 list.

Pocket, formerly known as Read It Later, is a free app, plugin, newsletter, and webpage that is an independent subsidiary of Mozilla. The service has gained an avid following among feature writing enthusiasts, with its prestigious yearly ‘Best Of’ lists acting as a de facto compilation of a year’s best and most impactful longform feature writing. The collection is, Pocket says, a reflection of 40 million monthly saves by a community of millions of Pocket users. Results were informed by aggregated and anonymised analysis of links saved to Pocket, taking into account “how often a piece of content was saved, opened, read, and shared, among other factors.”

This year’s honour roll showcases “the gravitational pull of stories that help us better understand the world around us – and the stories that help us better understand ourselves,” said Carolyn O’Hara, senior director of content discovery.

The Many Lives of a Fake Pro Cyclist, by CT senior features editor Iain Treloar, is a stranger-than-fiction investigation of an elaborate fabricated cycling career. Over more than a year of reporting, decades of deception were unravelled: a series of embellished life events stretching back to the 1990s, ties with the political and military elite, alleged misrepresentations across multiple industries, and possible stolen military valour, patiently building to a chilling final reveal.

The feature appears in Pocket’s ‘Best of 2022: Sports and Gaming‘ category, alongside titans of the longform game published in the New York Times, The Ringer, GQ, Sports Illustrated, and Vanity Fair.
