If World Cup cyclocross did ever arrive in New York, what might the course look like?

Friendly CyclingTips and VeloNews reader David Chomowicz already knew how Central Park ‘cross would work before news broke that UCI brass was investigating taking its prestigious series to “The Big Apple.”

And his concept – and the awesomely amateur map shared via email – was too good not to share.

A slaloming front-half, a crucial rock garden section near the Butterfly Center, and a “Three Sister” climb to the start/finish banners all made the design of Chomowicz’s gnarly N.Y. circuit.

“I have conceptualized this for years … I have three Central Park locations mapped out. It’s hilly and a little punchy, which is not evident in my sketch,” Chomowicz wrote to CyclingTips last week.

The former nationals-level MTB racer, avid ‘crosser, and six-time Unbound finisher Chomowicz knows Central Park inside out.

Living three blocks from the space gave Chomowicz plenty of time to ponder during his daily dog walks about what Mathieu van der Poel, Fem van Empel, Wout van Aert and Puck Pieterse might have to contend with if ‘cross came to town.

“There’s a lot of rocks in the park, and some punchy climbs. For the pointy end of the race it would be all about finding the right lines,” Chomowicz said in a follow-up call.

“There’s a portion I laid out on an old bridlepath – I’d leverage that for the final run up to two barriers and a paved section. Then it would be about a 100-meter kick up the ‘First Sister’ to the start-finish banner. In my crazy mind I actually looked up the UCI rules, and it would be wide enough for the final.”

Chomowicz left no stone unturned in his course design. Race organizers would even know the exact location of the beer tents and hot dog stalls.

And yes, hot dogs – not, pizza, bagels, or traditional Belgian frites – would be the cyclocross snacks to be served.

“Pizza in New York is the deity of foods. However, I reckon the hot dog, A.K.A. ‘the dirty water dog’ ought to be considered as the iconic street food,” he explained to the Brit that’s never even been close to the city.

And who would go well on this kind of course?

Chomowicz was in no doubt – Tom Pidcock and his MTB skills would reign supreme on the rocky, techy circuit.
