Watch Tom Pidcock going downhill, very fast
In the latest edition of his YouTube series Descent Disciples, cyclist and filmmaker Brian “Safa” Wagner follows Tom Pidcock on a very fast ride down Tuna Canyon, an infamous paved descent in Southern California.
The extraordinarily steep, winding, and narrow one-way road in the Santa Monica Mountains includes roughly 65 bends in 4.4 kilometers and drops 390 meters at an average gradient of 9.75% that maxes out at 18%.
In 2020, Safa cleaned the route, recording the fastest known time and documenting it on his Strava and YouTube channels—besting times set during the 2005 Red Bull Road Rage event, including that of former professional downhill biker Myles Rockwell.
In the film, he stays on Pidcock’s wheel, capturing the 23-year-old’s insane handling skills while demonstrating his own descending prowess.
“Tuna Canyon is a great stage for a world-class rider like Tom to showcase his bike handling skills,” Safa said. “There are plenty of descents in the area that are longer and have better views, but Tuna is where bike handlers come to test themselves. I think what Tom managed to do with only a few sighting runs beforehand proves he lives up to his reputation as the best descender in the pro peloton.”
Safa still holds the Strava KOM.
