The top five shades of green the new Tour de France points jersey should be instead

The top five shades of green the new Tour de France points jersey should be instead

There are arguably many things competing for the attention of the organizers of the Tour de France, like keeping spectators at a safe distance, or finding a new French 20-year-old to pin the hopes of a nation on.

Somehow, changing the shade of an iconic leader’s jersey got a fast pass to the front of that queue.

ASO made a splash last week at another of its marquee races, Paris-Nice, swapping out the traditional vibrant green sprinter’s jersey for a subdued forest green number that is difficult at best to pick out of the peloton.

The internet was quick to protest.

Slow to adapt to change, road cyclists are suckers for tradition.

Change one little turn of a century-old race route and we will complain loudly. Switch something that makes the viewing experience more difficult — like making the jersey the same dull color as Bora Hansgrohe’s kit — and we will amplify that with a megaphone tinged with feedback.

He’s Mads about the new color.

But regardless of the feelings of the masses, at least the ones with Twitter accounts, the jersey seems here to stay and is headed straight to the big time this July.

We would, however, like to offer up some alternatives to the ASO.

Number 5: #00fe08

The new color is too dull. Why not try too vibrant?

Number 4: #1d341e

If you’re going to make the green jersey impossible to pick out of a helicopter shot, might as well commit to the bit. How much darker can this color go and still be called green? That’s for the courts to decide.

Number 3: #caffba

How about a cheery pastel?

Number 2: #04F404

The green-screen color raises all sorts of exciting opportunities, like swapping it out for the old shade of green in real time on broadcasts.

Number 1: #54AC4B

Oh yeah, that’s the one. Right there. Some might say that’s the same color as the previous jersey. And they would be right! @ASO please change it back. Let this be a New Coke situation. Just go back. All is not lost, you can still fix this.

Yep, that’s the one. (Photo: MARCO BERTORELLO/AFP via Getty Images)
