Van Dijk wins her third time trial world title, Brown takes a close silver
WOLLONGONG, Australia (CT) – Ellen van Dijk has claimed her third time trial world title, defending her crown on the opening day of the 2022 Wollongong Road World Championships.
The 35-year-old Dutchwoman was the final rider down the start ramp and scorched her way to the best time at both intermediate time checks. She then crossed the finish line with a time of 44:28.60 for the 34 km course – an average speed of 46.137 km/h – putting her 13 seconds clear of silver medalist and local favourite Grace Brown and 42 seconds ahead of bronze medalist Marlen Reusser (Switzerland).
Brown was the early standout, posting a time of 44:41.33 which saw her spend several long hours in the hot seat, waiting for her biggest rivals to complete their effort. It was only when Van Dijk crossed the line, as the final rider to finish, that she had to relinquish her spot.
Van Dijk won in Flanders last year, and also in Florence in 2013.
