Luke Plapp solos to Australian road title

BUNINYONG, Australia (CT) – First-year WorldTour pro Luke Plapp (Ineos Grenadiers) has taken an emphatic solo win in the Australian Nationals road race.

After riding a very patient race, Plapp attacked solo from an elite group with around 29 km to go, on lap 14 of 16 around Mt. Buninyong, and set off in search of lone leader James Whelan (Bridgelane). Plapp eventually caught Whelan just before the end of the final climb up Mt. Buninyong and quickly burst past into the lead.

Over the remaining 8 km, the 21-year-old track and road rider expanded his lead to 45 seconds, taking an impressive victory. Former WorldTour rider Whelan held on for a strong second place, while Melbourne to Warrnambool winner Brendan “Trekky” Johnson claimed third after a late solo dig of his own
